No it's not going to turn around. It's going to be nothing but scarce part time (1 or 2day a wk ) jobs if any
You are absolutely right! And I feel so sorry for the young women who are encouraged to go to hygiene school by being told of the great money a hygienist USED to be able to make.(10 plus yrs. ago) There are no jobs at all in our entire area but they are starting ANOTHER dental hygiene school in the fall! Who are these people talking to?? Certainly not the hygienists in our local associations. P.S. I also agree that it seems most of the dentists haven't been taking anything like a pay-cut from themselves...just everyone else in the office! The whole thing is sad.

i have to comment on this, just because i wish i would have listened two years ago. i graduated in may 2013. i became a hygienist after being a dental assistant for two years. i went in for it because of the love i have for the dentistry field. i went on this forum when i started hygiene school and read all of the posts saying that there is no jobs, that hygienist are underpaid, and that it is no longer a good field. i tried to ignore all of the negativity surrounding the hygiene field that i came across, thinking when i got out of school, since i already had experience, was one of the best in my class, i would immediately get a job. wow was i wrong. not only is it literally impossible to get a reply back as a new graduate, the offers i get are mind blowing. i talked to one office that asked me what i was looking to get compensated. i said $30-35. the woman on the phone said "oh wow yeah no, dr. ______ is looking more at like $20.. to $25. i literally almost hung up the phone without saying goodbye. it's almost a year and I have no job. i temped for a day at one office. that's it. i can't tell you how many girls ask me "oh you went into hygiene?! yeah I think I'm gonna do that it pays good and it's not a lot of school". these are the people that are FLOODING OUR FIELD. if your looking to make a fast big buck in this, you won't. once your put out of your beautiful state of the art clinic in school into crappy operatory, you will want to get out of there so fast your head will spin. i seriously regret not going into nursing. at first I thought nursing would be too stressful and I wouldn't be emotionally strong en
Truthfully, there are minimal jobs out there. Most are for one day a week....no benefits, retiremnent, paid leave, etc. You are a self insured contractor. THis is not by any means a career that you can build any sort of future on. At best its a temp job for supplemental shopping money providing you have a hubby that makes lots of $ to pay for everything. I truly regret the time and effort I put into this "hobby". It is a thankless back breaking job for nothing, no security whatsoever. Anyone considering this profession is crazy.
I totally agree with this
Continuing... Nursing to make more you have to bend over backwards and sacrifice certain days to work... Such as night shifts etc. As i was saying, I make about 3000 a month after taxes, and it leaves me thur-sunday working my second job. I'm still young, and right now just working double time to save up for retirement. I know i'll burn out faster, but I know i'll get my loans paid of quicker and more savings. My income with hygiene is roughly 3200 a month after taxes depending on the calander month. I'm content with that and love it! So those who want to get into hygiene... I say go for it... You'll never know if you don't try!!! HOw many 20 yr olds can make 35+ an hour right outta two year college ? None... I had girls in my class that barely turned 21 and got a good job in hygiene... So girls... Go for it!!! YOu can always do others things on the side! Good Luck
Hi I'm 18 and my major is Dental Hygiene, I have one more year of pre-reqs, then i apply to the program. What my question is what your opinion on graduates getting hired straight out of school. The school I'm attending offers job placement, and they say all their students have found jobs within 6 months. i just don't want to be putting myself into a position where im setting my self up for failure.

I'm in Houston, Tx. I was thinking of going to school for DH. I have read up on it and everything. I do see a lot of people saying there are no positions available. So I have decided, before I enter into the field, to go to some offices myself and check things out. I when to at least 10 offices in the last two days. At the very first office I went to the young lady said it is a little over saturated. She also said you could get jobs but you have to "be a hustler" to get them. Well I don't think I would like having to do that. If I was already a DH, then yes I would in order to feed my family. But I also feel that your degree and experience should speak for itself! So I don't want to hustle to get a job. That dental office was in Jersey Village. So today I ventured to the Kingwood area. Pretty much every place I went to said they didn't know anything about the market being over saturated! They ALL recommend doing DH. Even one of the instructors at the campus (Lone Star Kingwood)said that all of her graduates that wanted to work have positions! I just don't know what to do or who to believe. I'm praying on the situation and waiting on a confirmation.
Hey guys, I've been following a lot of threads on here and I wanted to let everyone know that there IS a decent state where you can find hygiene jobs with benefits...Texas!..... Wow that is awesome to hear! I've been fighting with myself back and forth about DH school. It seems like a great career and I have always been interested in this field. You don't know how refreshing it is to finally see something positive about DH. I would die if I went to school 2 to 4 years for this then find that I can't find employment!!! I love to work and I love money so working 45hrs a week WOULD NOT be a problem for me.

Anybody who had same situation or know something about that please share that with me,please... Thanks
Pedro, Are you sure they offer the course on August 2014>? Are you really interested on taking this? When you are from non accredited program, foreign dentist and fail twice: you must take the remediation course otherwise you may retake the clinical portion and the Board never give the license until you prove that you take the course. Let me know if you are interested! veronica.

Hi, I have temped at several Dentists in 2013. Each time I was paid by a check directly from the dentist. I did not fill out a W-2 nor have I received 1099 forms from the places I've worked. My question is.... How do you file taxes (without W2/1099 forms) if you were paid less than $600, by a check? I never worked for each dentist more than one day, therefore never making more than $600 at each dentist office I temped for last year. How do I report the places I have temped on my taxes? If anyone has any experience/knowledge about this I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Hi JJF....I have been a LDH since 2004 and have a license in Illinois as well. I would strongly encourage you to call 25 offices and find out how many have part time or full time hygienist, ask about paid holidays, 401k packages, paid CE courses HEALTH INS. What the average pay is? In this state average pay 21.00 to34.00 for hourly around 18.00-19.50 per pt. In this area back stabbing totally goes on...in one office I'm paid by patient and work with 8-9 other ldh large volume...we only get paid to clean...I work in regular practice were I see one pt. about every hour. I have only had an .80 cent raise in 7 years. I have paid holidays and two weeks paid vac. UT now our front desk person thinks I should share some off my days because other hygienist needs more money...don't we all... For a young girl like yourself if you decide you still want hygiene as a career....then I would consider getting a B.S. in health administration, management, a field you can fall back in should hygiene not pan out like you think

I purchased GWL disability insurance from a broker in Vancouver in 1996. Just in the last 2 years I found out the plan is not what I was led to believe I had purchased. I would love to find out from Michelle, who had the initial post in this discussion, (somehow privately) if we had the same broker.
